Scene 1 : Internal : Airport, not far from ANS[]

BED: (busy airport concourse)

(Joe is walking through a security gate for arriving passengers transitioning into the main terminal.)

Briana:

Hello, Joe. Need a lift?

Joe:

(surprised) Briana? Uh, sure, I could use a ride.

Briana:

This way. I'm parked in the garage.

(They walk through the airport to the attached parking garage)

SFX: Footsteps

Joe:

Ah, do you mind telling me how you found me?

Briana:

When you disappeared from Camp Geisler my father was worried about you.
He assumed you were still sick...lost and suffering from memory problems.
He hired a company to track your spending...credit card use and such things.

Joe:

I see.

Briana:

When you started using your credit card yesterday, it was easy to track your movements.

Joe:

Right, I bought my ticket for this airplane flight using my credit card.

Briana:

So, what are your plans?
Do you want me to drive you home?

Joe:

Well, do you know my status at work?
I've been away for a while...was I fired?

Briana:

You were not fired, but my father cancelled your security pass.
He's been paranoid and worrying about industrial espionage.
With the great success of the VirileMail project, security has gotten real tight.

Joe:

Hm, I wonder about my personal belongings at work....

Briana:

Just make an appointment to see Anthony.

Joe:

Well, I'm not sure it would be a good idea to contact anyone at work.
Briana, have you ever noticed anything odd at Antler or something strange about your father's behavior?

Briana:

Of course I have, but you take the cake.
(Possibly epmhatic) Nobody else takes vacations on Mars.

Joe:

(laughs nervously) Ah, what do mean...Mars?

Briana:

Are you going to deny that you left Camp Geisler by spaceship and went to Mars?
You were gone just about long enough for the time it takes to go to Mars and then come back.

Joe:

How do you know that?

Briana:

(reflective) I made that trip once.
The rebels on Mars gave me a vaccine that helps me control the nanobots that are inside me.

Joe:

But you still work for Janek?

Briana:

I work for my father, but, ya, Janek has started asking me for favors.
I must say, I prefer working with Janek...in the old days the nanobots would not ask for help.

SFX: Footsteps end (They have arrived in the garage)

Joe:

Ha, ha, ya, I know what that's like.
Well, did you meet me at the airport because you are working for your father or because Janek ordered you to?

Briana:

Why does it matter?
In general, there is not much difference between what Janek wants and what my father wants.

Joe:

Well, I suppose both Anthony and Janek are mad at me now, but I'd still like to know who sent you to meet me.

Briana:

My father asked me to let him know as soon as I find you.
I don't think Janek really cares what you do now.

Joe:

Janek does not care?
That's interesting.
Anyhow, there is only one person I want to contact.

Briana:

Chloe.

Joe:

(slight suprise) How do you know?

Briana:

Womans intuition...ha ha!(laughs gently)
No...are you really that clueless, Joe?
I saw you with Chloe.
It was obvious that you two are an "item".
You should hear the way people talk about you two behind your backs at work.
Why should I be surprised that your one desire is to "contact" Chloe?

Joe:

The problem is, I don't want to see Chloe until I have my belongings...my personal stuff from work.

Briana:

Joe, how romantic...you bought her a ring!

Joe:

Um...no. (pause) Hey, Briana, could you do me a favor?
Could you get my personal belongings from work?

Briana:

What, are you afraid to go there now?

Joe:

Yes, I am.

Briana:

Your paranoia is a bit over the top, but, ya, I can do that.
How do I find your "personal belongings"?

Joe:

What I want is in a drawer of my desk...in the office I shared with Brian Kaplan.

Briana:

Why not just call Brian and have him bring your personal belongings to you?

Joe:

I suspect Brian is still under the control of the nanobots.

Briana:

Okay, in a drawer.
What will I be looking for?

Joe:

It's just a video tape.
It says "Janek/Router" on the label...

BED: Traffic noise+bird song

(Joe at Chloe's house.)

SFX:Door bell

SFX:Door chain

Chloe:

(puzzled) Joe?
(suprised) Joe!
(relived) I never should have doubted...

Joe:

Can I come in?
I need your help.

SFX: Large door opening

Chloe:

Why do you need my help?
What happened to you when we were in the mountains?

Joe:

There is so much to tell.
I was taken from Earth to Mars.
I just got back.
Chloe:
Mars?

FADE BED

Scene 2b : Internal : Chloe's Home[]

(Joe enters house)

Joe:

I met some anti-alien rebels on Mars.

Chloe:

Aliens?

Joe:

Aliens are the cause of all the strange events at work.
They use nanobots to control human brains.

Chloe:

Joe, (pause) that sounds crazy.

Joe:

I am now free of the nanobots.
I brought back from Mars a rebel vaccine that can also free you. Just drink this.

Chloe:

(scared) I'm afraid.

Joe:

(giving reassurance) Trust me, Chloe.

Chloe:

But I feel fine.

Joe:

When my brain was freed from the nanobots I remembered what had happened with the video tape.
They tricked me into thinking that the evidence was on a different tape, but it is on this tape.
It was never lost...the nanobots just made me put it in a drawer and forget about it.
Watch.

(Joe puts the tape into Chloe's VCR)

SFX: VCR Tape insertion

SFX: VCR operation

Joe:

This was the day I tried to show you the routing tables.
Watch!

Chloe:

We both passed out!

Joe:

We were too close to the truth.
Then -look!- we woke up and went off in the wrong direction.
Janek had protected himself from being discovered.
The aliens still control your brain.
Drink this and you will be free.

SFX: Vial clink followed by a swallow. (Chloe drinks)

Chloe:

This is so strange, is this a dream?

SFX: Door bell

Chloe:

Joe, I'm dizzy, can you see who is at the door?

Briana:

Everything cool, Joe?

Chloe:

What's going on?

Joe:

(to Chloe) It's Briana. (to Briana) She just drank the vaccine.

Briana:

How do you feel, Chloe?

Chloe:

My head is spinning...Joe has been telling me wild stories about aliens.

Joe:

Soon your brain will be freed from alien nanorobots.

Chloe:

Joe, I...I remember!
I remember what was on that video tape.
And I can remember that whole week.....how the VirileMail project got started.
Oh, but that was crazy...and now....I can see that it was all Janek....you are right Joe....it was Janek, an AI!
We've been the puppets of a machine!
Do I sound crazy?

Briana:

Chloe, you are not crazy, you're just waking up.

Joe:

We got lucky...Briana was recruited to serve as a monitor of all the strange goings on associated with the Geisler family.

Chloe:

Recruited by who?

Briana:

A network of people who know about the alien nanobots.
They do everything they can to resist the aliens.

Joe:

And with your help, we're going to take down Janek.
I know how to do it.
The aliens planted a nanoscale device inside one of the servers.
It allows Janek to communicate directly with the alien nanorobotic life forms.
Chloe, I need you to go into work today, go to the server room and destroy that alien device.

Chloe:

How will I find it?
Can we detect its signals?

Joe:

The trick is to trace to it from Janek.
The rebels on Mars were able to devise a simple trace strategy.
Once you identify the specific server, all you need to do is go into the server room and pull out the unit containing the alien hardware.

Chloe:

I'll also shut off the liquid nitrogen cooling system.
That will force all the Lockback modules off line, removing most of Janek's computational capacity.

Joe:

Yes, but we need a permanent solution.
Everyone else at Antler is still infected with nanobots.
If you shut down the Lockback modules and start shouting 'aliens!' they'll think you are crazy and just switch the cooling system back on (pause) after they have security throw you out of the building.

Chloe:

Maybe the easy thing to do would be to just destroy the entire server room.

Joe:

(laughs) That is the direct approach, but Geisler would not be pleased.
The rebels on Mars suggested a better approach.
The Lockback chips normally reduce their power demands if there is no coolant reaching them.

Chloe:

Right.
We used them in low power mode before we got the liquid nitrogen cooling system running.
In fact, we could not ramp them up to full power until the liquid nitrogen was flowing through the Lockback modules.
If there were a way...

Joe:

(breaks in) There is a way.
There is an over-ride instruction that will lock them in full power mode.
Then when you shut off the coolant line, within a minute all the chips will cook.

Chloe:

Geisler will still be upset even if I just selectively destroy the Lockback modules.

Joe:

This is going to get interesting Chloe. We may have to go into hiding for a while, until the resistance can get the anti-Badhesin vaccine production under way.
Eventually, we should be able give Geisler a dose of the vaccine.
Some day you will be famous as the great heroine who stopped the alien invasion.
We must act quickly.
Janek was expecting me to deliver a Martian mind control virus to Earth, but instead I came here.
We must act before Janek knows that I betrayed him.

(phone rings) SFX:Telephone

Chloe:

Hello.
(at Briana) Briana, it's your father.

(Briana takes the phone)

Briana:

Hello. (pause)
Very well. (pause)
Right.

(ends call) SFX: Phone hangup Birana (cont.)

Joe, my father wants to meet with you, first thing this morning at Antler HQ.

Chloe:

(worriedly) Is that the time?
I'm late for work!
Well, I expect Anthony to fire me today.
Beyond that, I do not know what to expect.

Joe:

I'll be in my meeting with Anthony when the fireworks start.
If I can, I'll try to make him understand what is going on.
But I agree, I expect us to both be thrown out.
He might call the police and press charges.

Chloe:

I plan to be careful.
If all goes well, Anthony might not even figure out that I am the saboteur.

Joe:

Chloe, would you go away with me?
Will you go into hiding with me if we have to lie low and wait for the resistance to start producing vaccine?

Cloe:

Let's hope it does not come to that.
But yes, it would be good to be with a friend if I get myself in trouble today.

FADE OUT

Scene 3a : Internal : ANS Anthony Geisler's office[]

FADE IN

BED: Office, air-con slightly noticable.

(Joe arrives at Geisler's office)

Geisler:

(happy) Joe!
Thanks for coming in.
I hope you do not mind that I sent Briana after you as soon as I was told that you were back in town.

Joe:

(polite) No, sir.

Geisler:

You look healthy and- well, I guess I need not have worried about you.
Still, I'm baffled....how did you get off the mountain?
Just hike out along the service road?

Joe:

Maybe some day I will tell you the details of my disappearance, but this is not the time for that.

Geisler:

Must you make it into such a mystery?

Joe:

I have a little job to do.

Geisler:

(questioning) A job, eh?
Does that mean you have no interest in returning to work here?

Briana:

My father has been afraid that you went off to some other company to sell your knowledge of the software and hardware that went into the VirileMail system.

Joe:

(laughs) That is a good idea, I could use the money!
But, no, I've been concerned with things that are more important than money.

Geisler:

More important than money?
If you are still struggling with your health, let me know.
Your eligibility for health cover isn't affected by your absence

Joe:

I've never had a health problem.
If I did care about money, I'd try suing you for having an unsafe work place, but that would not really be fair.
I doubt if you are capable of even recognizing that a problem exists.

Geisler:

What problem are you talking about?

Joe:

I'm not the only one who has had problems here.
For a while I thought it was an infection, like Legionnaires Disease.
Everyone on the VirileMail project was infected, but somehow I was the only one who noticed.
Everyone else was happy to just continue as if nothing strange had happened.
Even now, you seem to imagine that it is just good fortune that the world's first human-like artificial intelligence appeared here in our little computer network.

Geisler:

I admit that we got lucky.
The synergy between the VirileMail software and the Lockback chips is fantastic.
But good things happen when you work to create good products.
The combination of two good products can often be greater than anyone could predict.

SFX: (phone rings) Geisler (into phone):

Hello. (pause)
I see.
Bring her here. (ends phone call)

SFX: Phone hangup Geisler (cont.):

There is a problem with the server array.
All the Lockback modules went off line.
Someone shut off the liquid nitrogen lines.
(worried) Joe, did you make Chloe do something incredibly stupid?

Joe:

Like everyone else associated with the VirileMail project, Chloe has been battered and abused.
You cannot really expect people to just accept mistreatment.

Geisler:

What are you talking about?
(incredulous)Battering? Abuse? Mistreatment?
I've heard no complaints.

Joe:

I have a video tape that you should take a look at some time.
Chloe saw it and, like me, was not cheered by what she saw.
You think the VirileMail software is going to be a big money maker, a revolutionary advance in computer science, but it is much more than that.

Geisler:

(raised tone) What are you trying to say?

SFX: Door (Chloe is brought into the office by a security guard)

Geisler:(at Chole)

Chloe, did you really destroy the server array?

Chloe:

Yes, I discovered that there was an unauthorized piece of hardware that had been planted in our server array...
a communications device used by aliens!
The alien device was in this little circuit board.

Geisler:

What is this, some kind of transmitter?"

Joe:

It's a communications device.
Remember back at the start of the VirileMail project, the hole in the wall of the server room?
The network's security has been compromised ever since then.

Geisler:

So you did this, Joe!
You are some kind of industrial spy ?

Joe:

In a sense I'm responsible.
I searched the server array, looking for something like this, and I missed it.
I should have gone to the trouble of looking inside every piece of equipment in the room...but I was distracted from doing my duty.

Chloe:

Don't talk flap doodle, Joe.
You did more to try to figure out what was going on than anyone else around here.
And of course, thanks to you we did finally figure out that this alien device was in our network.

Geisler:

But is it true?
Thanks to you, all the Lockbacks are burned out?
Why destroy company equipment?

Joe:

That "company equipment" was a Trojan Horse...it held an alien intelligence!

Geisler:

(angry) I refuse to listen to this nonsense any more!
(to guard) Call the police.
I want these two 'crazies' out of my sight!

(The security guard tries to handcuff himself to Chloe...

Chloe:

(in panic) Joe?!

...Joe jumps forward and throws a shoulder block into the guard.)

SFX: Ugh! (from guard)

Joe (at Clohe):

(command) Run!

(they run to a stair well...

SFX: Running footsteps..

... down to the first floor

'SFX: Running footsteps on steel...

...and out into the parking lot...

SFX: Door being slammed open...

... They get into Chloe's car and drive into street in traffic.)

SFX: Car doors followed by rapid ignition, squealing tyres.. (fades into)
SFX: Traffic noise

FADE OUT

Scene 3b : External : Outside ANS[]

FADE IN BED: Traffic noise

Chloe:

Sorry, I did not know about the new security cameras.
They had a camera on the liquid nitrogen tanks and caught me on tape.
But it does not matter, I had enough time.
I would have crippled Janek even had I known I would get caught.

Joe:

Well, we've done all we can do. It's up to the resistance now to come through with production of the vaccine.

FADE OUT

Scene 4 : Internal : Beach House[]

FADE IN

BED: Domestic environment.

SFX: TV in background - News theme-into bulletin.'

' (Joe and Chloe eating dinner, TV news in back ground)

Chloe:

Joe, I really like living here on the beach, this has been a wonderful vacation.

Joe:

I can't stop thinking about the possibility that we might be caught.
I wish you would not go running on the beach.

Chloe:

We can't stay inside all the time.
You go to that little General Store to do our shopping every day.

Joe:

Sh! Listen!

(Joe turns up volume of the TV)

TV news:

.. The mysterious organization, calling itself the "alien resistance",

has flooded the internet with a warnings about the alien nanobots.

They claim that their vaccine can free people from alien mind control.
and have announced that production of this vaccine is underway.
In related news,
Computer Services firm, Antler Network Services, which was earlier thought to be the victim of 'industrial' terrorism,
has been identified by the "alien resistance" as the location where the alien artificial life form was constructed in a computer server array.
A "Dr. Meade" has been described as the heroic employee who discovered and crippled the (slight disbelif)alien AI.

Joe:

(laughs) Hey, Chloe, you're on TV!

(Joe turns down TV volume)

Chloe:

Ug, that picture of me looks like a mug shot.

Joe:

Well, the cat is out of the bag and now you're famous.
The rebels must have the vaccine in production and so they finally broke the news about the aliens.
You know what this means...

Chloe:

Our vacation' is over.
We might as well go back home.

Joe:

You're a celebrity, the girl who defeated the alien AI!

FADE OUT

Scene 5 : Internal : ANS Anthony Geisler's Office[]

FADE IN

(Chloe and Joe arrive at Geisler's Office)

Briana (Briana speaking):

Joe, Chloe, come on in.

Geisler:

(jests) Ah, the dynamic duo of industrial sabotage!

Briana (Janek speaking) :

Don't listen to Anthony, he's not rational since getting a dose of the rebel vaccine.

Geisler:

Quiet, Janek.
If I'm not fully rational it's because I had your miserable nanobots in my brain for 50 years.

Joe:

Janek?

Briana (Janek speaking) :

I'm here inside Briana's brain.

Joe: (disapointed) Oh, no!

Briana (Janek speaking)

After you failed to deliver the Badhesin virus I got Briana to do it.
She volunteered to infect herself with both the virus and the Naegleria fowleri vector for the adapters.
When Chloe destroyed the server array, I needed a new "voice" so I transferred some nanobots into Briana.
After a week of learning my way around inside Briana's brain, I can report that the adapters and Badhesins seem to be working well, very well indeed.

Joe:

Briana, why are you helping the aliens?

Briana: (Briana speaking) :

Janek is not as bad as you think, Joe.
After I delivered the virus, I didn't want them to test it on anyone but myself.

Joe:

But Briana, why did you deliver the virus for Janek?

Briana (Briana speaking) :

Janek knew you were up to something with the resistance and had me on standby to make the virus delivery.

Joe:

So, you are not really part of the resistance?

Briana (Briana speaking):

I'm a card-carrying member of the resistance, but I also do favors for the aliens.
They really are not as bad as you like to imagine.

Chloe:

Let me see if I understand this.
I thought I gave the Janek AI a lobotomy by destroying the Lockback chips, but the fully conscious and diabolical Janek is now...inside Briana's brain?

Briana: (Briana speaking):

It's not that hard to understand.
The "Janek AI" always existed as a distributed system, both in the Antler server array and also scattered around Earth in nanobot form.
Chloe, when you destroyed all those Lockback modules, Janek also existed in other places, as many nanorobotic replicas of what was in the Antler server array.
The goal has always been to put the 'Janek AI' into efficient contact with people, and the Badhesin virus was the last technology needed to allow alien minds to efficiently connect to human minds.
Now my mind is closely integrated with 'Janek' and he can time-share my voice.

Joe:

Janek, if you are here, tell me the the last thing you told me before I got off the spaceship.

Briana: (Janek speaking):

I offered to take you to Chloe and I promised to remove her nanobots after you delivered the virus.
I now see that you used the rebel vaccine to free you and her from the nanobots.

Chloe:

It's true, Janek lives again.

Briana: (Janek speaking):

It is only in your limited way of thinking that I died when you destroyed the server array.
But let's not talk about me. Joe, I still want you to come back to Mars with me.

Joe:

What would be the point of that?
Isn't the game over?
All Earth now knows about nanobots and aliens.
The anti-Badhesin vaccine is being mass-produced.
You can no longer turn humans into your puppets.

Briana: (Janek speaking):

Not much of importance has changed.
An excellent human-nanobot interface now exists, which was our long-term goal.
Now the people of Earth know about nanobots, but they will find little evidence of them.
Aliens? Even less evidence.
In a few years only scattered conspiracy mongers will still be talking about aliens.
The anti-Badhesin vaccine is of little importance. Few humans were ever infected by nanobots.
According to our code of ethics, we must make available a means to remove nanobots from human brains, a method that humans can use at will.
We have met that obligation.
Everything else continues as before. I can tell you this, Joe, you will now be bored on Earth.
You might as well come back to Mars.

Chloe:

Bored on Earth?
We now have the means to make true AI systems.
I'm sure Anthony will re-build the Antler server array.

Briana (Janek speaking):

Yes, yes, that path is open to you, but remember, I will not be in the Antler server array anymore.
Even if you connect up a fresh batch of Lockback modules, you will not magically have a system that will pass a Turing test.
No, all you will prove is that you do not know how to program a human-like AI.
Human progress along those lines will continue most rapidly on Mars, with the team that made the VirileMail software.

Joe: :

(laughs) So, Janek, it's true...all this mind control and pushing for technological advances on Earth...it was just to improve human-alien communication.

Briana: (Janek speaking)

Why else? (pauses)
Oh, with time you humans will grow up and want to join the galactic community, but there is no rush.
And, of course, when that does start to happen it will almost certainly happen first at the Mars base, not on Earth.

Chloe:

So it's true, Joe, you really went to Mars?

Joe:

Yes, there are humans living on Mars.
They provided the vaccine that freed your brain from the alien nanobots.

Briana (Janek speaking):

Well, I've had my say.
My offer stands, for both of you.
Joe, at least bring Chloe to Mars for a visit, let her see for herself that AI research there is far ahead of anything on Earth.
Briana is also eager to visit Mars.

Briana: (Briana speaking):

You know the routine, Joe.
When you are ready to go, just let me know. I'll fly you up the camp where Janek's spaceship will be waiting.

Briana: (Janek speaking):

But do not wait too long.
I want to get off this xenophobic world.
We have a lot of work to do on Mars.

Geisler:

So, Janek, what about the destruction of the Antler server array?

Briana: (Janek speaking):

Sorry, Anthony, you've been rather well used.
I thank you and your family for giving birth to me, but I cannot leave the VirileMail software on Earth.
You Earthlings are not ready for machines with human-like intelligence.
Still, you and Helen have the Lockback chips and you are free to develop that technology.
Your profits should make up for the way I used you.

Joe:

What do you think Chloe?
Would you come with me to Mars?

Chloe:

I'd like to continue working on AI research, real human-like machine intelligence.
It sounds like we'll have to go to Mars if we want to keep at it.
I wonder what the morning run be like on Mars....

FADE OUT (into)

Scene 6 : Last Word[]

Janek: (Narration) You just never know what you'll find on the internet. Joe should have known better than to put his account of events in a public place where people from Earth can listen to it. Look at where it ended up: on YouTube and scattered around at various wiki websites.

Yes, Joe should have known better than to try too stir up trouble on Earth. Well, what did he really expect? The anti-alien resistance movement on Earth is essentially dead....only a few cranks and fanatics even remember their hysterical claims about an alien invasion.

But now that "the cat is out of the bag" I feel I should say something in my own defense. Joe tends to like to depict me as some kind of diabolic mastermind. However, when I was first created on Mars as what became the VirileMail software, I was barely conscious and vastly ignorant about humans. I'll always be thankful for the hard work by Joe and Chloe and the rest of the folks at Antler...they really came through and got my software routines adapted to the available hardware on Earth....there were significant differences from what was available on Mars. I feel bad about how Joe and Chloe were treated. I now know a thousand improvements that could have been made in how the VirileMail project was started and pushed to completion. However, I did the best I could.

There are many other corrections to Joe's account of events and insights into alien activities that I could offer, but they would probably all become a useless distraction. I'll stick to just two key issues.

First, I suppose it was reasonable for Joe to imagine that he was somehow particularly resistant to nanobot control. However, that is simply not the case. Everyone who was put on the VirileMail project had been carefully selected because they were easy to control in what we can call the "typing insanely fast mode". It was anticipated that there would be a critical time for initial stabilization/development of the VirileMail software on Earth. For many years the staff of Antler Network Services was carefully assembled with the goal of having personnel in place who could be swung into action as soon as the software was ready to be sent over from Mars. Joe had been a carrier of nanobots since he was three years old.

What allowed Joe to start escaping from nanobot control was his love for Chloe. I take full responsibility for being so slow to recognize Joe's infatuation with Chloe. However, in the end, everything worked out fine. It is just these kinds of strange and unexpected events that provide us with new Martians.

Second, I want to stress that "everything worked out fine" not just for me, but also for Joe. Before the VirileMail project, Joe was a video game junkie and likely to die at a young age in a spectacular high speed rush hour collision. It was only after the nanobots started pushing Joe to perform that he began to recognize his own abilities as a computer programmer. Joe's trip to Mars opened his awareness to the wider world of exciting possibilities...I suppose for the first time the real world became of more interest to him than fantasy worlds of video games. And I doubt if Joe can harbor any disappointment over the influence we aliens had on his romance with Chloe. That romance was totally "dead on arrival" before the two of them were thrown together in the VirileMail project. Anyhow, I do wish Joe and Chloe good luck with their current work on Mars. Joe is finally learning the duties, rights, responsibilities and restrictions that govern the actions of Observers. Part of being an Observer is working to improve things for you humans as much as possible....but it's my job to push back. That's just the way it is.
