Unicorn coats are smooth as silk and shimmer like silver whether in light or shadow. Unicorns have a single horn on their forehead, ending in a sharp point. The horn is straight and smooth. Measuring a foot and a half long, the horn resembles polished marble.

Unicorns live only on Unicorn Island, which was first discovered by the Armidian Navy in 3742. On his first exploration of the island, Admiral Córan noted that the Silkskin is watched over and protected by a race of tall slender elves who call themselves The Tenders. They kept the Unicorns away from Córan's mining camps and out of sight. Unfortunately, as mining operations expanded, the unicorns and Tenders were pushed further and further back. In the sympathy of these rare beings, the Armidian Empire and the Monarch of Galicia, to whom Unicorn Island belonged in 4733, passed laws banning mining and landings on the island.

After the fall of the First Age and the destruction of the great empires of the world, all records of the island, its wealth of resources, and its inhabitants were lost. Later, when the island was re-discovered and re-explored by Captain Slurmansk in 8472, the Tenders prevented him from acquiring a Unicorn, a desire that plagued him until his demise. Many scribes believe that the Unicorn are the descendants of Ichiarus, the unicorn steed of Ichi'ondrion, god of vengeance.
