[edit] Volcanic origins
The description of Arkanros being surrounded by mountains makes me think that it possibly sits in the mouth of a huge extinct volcano. If you're ever visited extinct volcanoes, you'll notice that they are basically a flat area encircled by hills. I'm going to think this over some more before adding it.
