The good news was that it was last period; the bad, that it was gym class. No-gym class per se was neutral. Floor hockey per se was neutral. Being on the creatively named "Team 3" was neutral. But the team's lack of a goaltender was not.
The girls rushed to "defend", which involved standing around, chatting, and leaping out of the way if the ball came by. The boys rushed to "offend", which involved running around, slamming or being slammed into the wall, and getting penalty calls called on them. The net was left empty.
Reluctantly, Taylor headed towards it, to the derisive hoots of Team 4. But at the last minute the black stick was picked up by a lanky freshman. He nodded almost deferentially to Taylor and watched the teacher drop the tennis ball on the floor.
