The Grand Master was a position established with the coming of the Order of the Black Jewel, established to help control the order and put it towards more productive means, the Grand Master was the final authority on major decisions within the Order.

The Grand Master was given the ability to call to order a Council of the Wise, which consisted of a meeting of the minds between some of the more powerful within the Order. Such Councils were called but three times within the history of the Order, with the last officially announcing the disbanding of the Order, after the Great Massacre, in which the Order lost most of its members in a violent turn of paranoid events.
Other abilities of the Grand Master were to be able to call the members of the order into armed combat if need be. This power eventually led to the establisment of the official military branch of the order, The Knights Obsidian. Though it was through uniting the various members of the order in one place that led to the assassination of Grand Master Wilhelm Blas in 1666.
Though with all these abilities generally granted to the leader of a mass organization, there was a responsibility asked of the Grand Master as well. For it was in the Grand Master's possession that one could find the very secrets which held the Order together. Thus were many attacks made on the location and very being of the Grand Master throughout history, though the only successful attack and assassination, as mentioned above, led to failure as it was official decree that the secrets be left behind with the Archduke in the event of a Military Establishment.

There were nine known Grand Masters, of which the last was Obelisk Mozmor, who was hunted down and killed by disgruntled members of the Order after officially disestablishing it with the coming of the Second Age.
