Prior to The Great Schism of 435, magic was not "available" for the use of humans. The power to alter and control the fabric of existence was held by a sentient commune of formless beings called Ordinis. However, in 435 discord arose among the Ordinis' constituent parts. The resulting separation of Ordinis into its many parts resulted in the rare wandering species of magical entities which continue to roam the earth even into the Third Age.

Though extremely rare, even rarer still are those who can convince an Ordinis to convey their powers upon them. Each Ordinis has varying characteristics: some may possess the power of weather alteration, some may only possess the power to turn rocks into worms. Each, however, is possessed of its own "personality". Any who wish to have the power to wield an Ordinis must be crafty, diplomatic, bold and compatible with the ability. However, once "tamed" an Ordinis is a very loyal creature and will remain with their master until their death.

The Ordinis are thought to have gained their powers with the help of Kaos, who convinced Zyr0 to incorporate anomalies for them.
