The merpeople held a society similar to that of the Union until some time during the First Age, when their revolution reached the surface of the River Arkanros. Subsequently, 10,000 arrows were shot down into the river to scare them off, but this unknowingly had the actual effect of killing off the majority of the merpeople.

Nowadays, merpeople are a rare sight, their society has degenerated, and they are far more docile toward humans, having learned their hard lesson. They only surface to visit people whom they deem safe to visit, and when they do so, it is considered a sign of good luck. This is true if after befriending the merperson, the human nearly drowns and is subsequently saved by the merperson.

It is also rumored that the merpeople are guardians of the buried riches of the pirates of antiquity who once operated in the River Arkanros.
