Liches, the people of Bane, are a race (though not composed of a single species) of people practicing advanced necromancy. Liches are held by the Dark Law, and are only bound to it tighter as they advance through their study. Their history and culture is not revealed to others, but is learned after initiation. Initiation is a ritual of accepting a chosen individual into the Lich race, and can sometimes end with the becoming of a lesser lich or death. How it's connected to keeping the person alive and how such life would be defined is not clear, but it's known that Liches live for a very long time. Thus they have time to study and keep records, which makes them very educated and they're a significant source of information about the past, though they don't tend to be helpful revealing it.
[edit] Dark Lich
A lich of high power is known as a dark lich, and sacrifices much for its new power. In return for the ability to call forth power from the Abyss, dark liches are easilly banished to the Abyss. They are also held highly to the Dark Law. The ritual of becoming a dark lich is shrouded in mystery, though it is known that it involves pain and has a conclusion of some sort of loyal trust in their acceptance through death, only revived if they are worthy. It is believed that the physical distance to the Underworld may be a factor in how a lich is reborn. After rebirth, there are 4 possible conclusions; death, lesser lich, lich or dark lich.
[edit] Lesser Lich
Lesser liches are those which fail in a ritual that marks a milestone of their being a lich. Lesser liches' lives are much shorter than a common lich and their power is only that of a common necromancer. They do, however, retain their knowledge, and thus are still wise in the ways of necromancy.
