Goblins are creatures that resemble what humanity looked like a long time ago, before Eternity's End, before humans evolved to their present state. As such, the two races look very alike, but the contemporary view is that the goblins are both backward and corrupt.
Goblins were mostly eradicated in the few centuries following the Dawn of Ages. They were armed with the same weapons that humanity had back then, but did not have the aspects of civilization so crucial to a race's survival. Now, the remaining accomplishments of the goblins have faded through time.
Sometime before Eternity's End, the goblins obtained the enmity of Zamn, who disowned them and propelled humanity to its superior state to spite the goblins. (Similar processes had occurred millennia before with first the Dum, then the Kupp, then the Serdians, and then the Ceritans before the Goblins.)
Goblin aid was instrumental in helping the Union eliminate the threat of the golems. At its apex, the goblin state was due north of the golem state.
