Bloodthorns are black bushes covered in thorns, which are native to the scrub hills of the Wastelands. They can sense movement around them and move their thorny branches to try to cut nearby life, though not necessarily to kill them, so that their blood will spill on the ground. This is because bloodthorns can be killed from an overdose of blood in their vicinity, which causes them to shrivel.
It has been determined that their method of survival is parasitic as well photosynthetic, as they often feed on blood soaked into their thorns and roots. While they do have the ability to harness sunlight--their leaves have chlorophyll as well as melatonin--they cannot survive very well in the Wastelands without the vitamins and minerals that only the native fauna would possess. South of the Wastelands, the inefficiency of the Bloodthorn anatomy means that they are overcrowded by other species.
The human governments have over the years mounted various eradication efforts and awareness campaigns, with the result that the bloodthorns are now exceedingly rare and have been identified as an endangered species.
