Schism is a cosmic-level spell that splits a god/demigod/deity into infinite pieces of various sizes. There are only two recorded instances of this spell being used, and both were used on the same occasion: what is now called the Great Schism.
Lore says that the Schism occurred back when the world was young and the deities were still locked in the great Chaos of the Gods. Near the end of this timeless conflict, the two opposing demigods Tyrael and Scipios were summarily devastated by this spell, when they were separated into many small pieces which drifted into the Midworld, where they lay waiting for nearly a millennium.
The methods for constructing this spell, which has only been performed by Zamn and Wit, have yet to be discovered. It is certain, however, that it will be either complicated or counterintuitive. Although many have considered how this spell can be constructed, no have so far succeeded, and people have long since despaired of finding this elusive spell.
Upon being hit by Schism, deities break into an infinite number of pieces, not all of which are equal, but which without each other are less powerful and more or less inactive. These fragments are known as Spirit Shards, as the deities are in essence spirits.
