Necromancy is the magic of death and dealing with the Dead. Necromancy is a somewhat obscure art, although it is one of the elemental magics. The theoretical necromancer Neodyesius discovered in 1032 that the sound of musical instruments, when imbued with magical power, have a great effect on the Dead, and can force them to behave in a way specified by the individual necromancer. No one yet knows what exactly causes this effect; however it is known to be associated with sound, as if the sound is broken or interrupted, the spell will not work to its full effect. This is now employed in Vivomancy as well, due to its effects on living beings, though these are somewhat lesser. Due to their effects, which are made greater in Death, many Necromancers carry bells or panpipes. Though other instruments are sometimes employed, these are the most common, being easily portable. Contrary to popular belief, the power of any necromantic instrument does not depend on the actual instrument, as no instrument has yet been discovered that harbors an effect greater than any other. Rather, their power depends upon the strength of the bespeller.
