Causes of the War[]

World War I was caused by a series of issues and disputes amongst the great powers of Europe: Imperialism, militarism, and the disputes of the Balkans, along with nationalism and other concerns. Throughout the 19th century, the major European powers (Great Britain, Caladaria, Laurasia, Briannia, Austriana, Maryneria, Belgium, the Deustchlands, Italia, and others) had tried their best in order to insure a balance of power. By 1900, a complex series of military and political alliances was in existence that were meant to insure the peace. This had commenced in 1815, with the Holy Alliance comprised of Prussia, Austriana, and Laurasia. This agreement failed because Austriana and Laurasia clashed over Balkans policies. Laurasia remained friendly with Prussia (Caladaria after 1871), with the Reinsurance Treaty of 1890 and the Laurasian-Caladarian Alliance of 1894 bringing the nations together into the Dual Alliance. Austriana, on the other hand, cultivated good relations with Briannia, ushering in the Dual Alliance of 1879. This was inspired by increasing fear of Caladaria amongst those two nations. Caladarian Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, from 1873 until his oust from power in 1890, worked to preserve peace amongst the European powers. After 1890, however, Willhelm II reached out feelers with Great Britain, culiminating in the British-Caladarian Alliance of 1904, and then the British-Laurasian Entente of 1907.

Briannia nursed a major grudge against Caladaria after it had been defeated in the Briannian-Prussian War of 1870-71. From 1873-1879, the Briannian imperial government implemented significant military reforms that drastically changed the organization, discipline, tactics, command, and weaponry of the Briannian force, adopting many Caladarian and Laurasian procedures in the process. Briannia competed with Great Britain for naval power, dediciating enormous economic resources to expand the Briannian Imperial Navy from 1890-1914. Britain, however, managed to retain her significant advantage over the Briannians, particuarly by the launch of the Dreadnought-class in 1906. Austriana also spent vast amounts of spending on her army, as did Maryneria, who were hoping to effectively resist Laurasia. Laurasia in turn, also expanded her navy and reorganized her army. All of these military races and build-ups from 1871 to 1914 are known as the Great Race.

Austriana then instigated the Bosnian crisis of 1908-09 by offically annexing the former Ottoman territory of Bosnia-Herzegovina, which it had occupied since 1878.
